Fruit of the Spirit

We are branches

Just as fruit trees or grape vines have branches on which fruit is produced, we are a branch of Jesus (He is the vine) and we are to produce fruit. There are many scriptures that speak of believers as fruit bearers. Fruit tastes good and help us to grow strong. As believers, we should taste good by producing fruit of the Spirit and we should help others to grow strong in Jesus.

John 15:5 (NIV)

This week we learn about the various fruits of the Spirit. Watch the video below to learn more!

Memory Verse:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

GALATIANS 5:22-23 (NIV)

Going Further

Hi Everyone! A couple of ideas for family activities after watching this video:

1) Read/Review Galatians 5:13-26 NIV

2) Family Time.

  • Spell out the qualities (love, joy, peace…) of the Spirit with a fruit of your choice – berries work well.  (Look at the picture near this text.)
  • Create a “family tree” by cutting out a large green tree shape.Find a place to hang/display it. (This is a great opportunity to review the lesson from Sarah, talking about the role of the Holy Spirit giving us nourishment for bearing fruit, just as a tree needs sunshine and water. We don’t produce our own fruit – Jesus does that as we spend time with Him.) Each month, as a new “fruit” is introduced, cut out some shapes of a specific color representing that fruit. For example, during October, that fruit can be red apples representing the fruit of “love”. Make them big enough to write the child’s name and how the child demonstrated love, and hang it on the tree. Each time a fruit is hung on the tree, have a celebration through verbal encouragement, hugs, shouting “Hip, hip, hoorah!” or whatever encouragement works for your family. Each subsequent month should have a new fruit. The goal is to have a tree full of all nine fruits at the end of the nine months, but even if there are just a few, be encouraging! This is a growing process!
  • Create a fruit basket and give it to a neighbor, or deliver it to a retirement center. Take this opportunity to share that this month your family is focusing on the fruit of love. Because Jesus loves us first, we want to share that love with them. After each child participates in this adventure together, be sure to make fruit with their name(s) on it and hang on the family tree!
  • Pray together as a family.
