Storge

Familial Love

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Romans 12:9-10 (NIV)

This week we focus on a type of love referenced in the Bible called Storge or family love. It is the love that family members feel for one another – especially the love between parents and children. It is an accepting type of love – accepting someone for who and where they are in life. It is based on a family-type of connection. Watch the video below to learn more!

Memory Verse:

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Going Further

Hi Everyone! A couple of ideas for family activities after watching the video:

1) Read/Review Exodus 2:1-10 (NIV)

2) Family Time.

  • In today’s story about Miriam and Moses, we learned about “Storge” love, or love that we have for our family. Remember that love means doing things for others without expecting anything in return. Do you think that Miriam was expecting anything in return from baby Moses? Can you think of something you have done in the last week that showed love toward a member or members of your family? Miss Sarah gave you a challenge! Can you think of something you can do this coming week to show someone in your family that you love them?
  • Create a diorama that depicts the story of Miriam and Moses. Use a cupcake holder for the basket, and a small object such a rock or cotton ball, with a face drawn on, wrapped in a napkin for Baby Moses. Create Miriam, kneeling, by drawing her on heavy duty paper such as card stock or a filing folder, and bending the figure at the knees. Use some branches from a bush or tree, and use them for Miriam to hide behind. Draw a river on a piece of paper. You can include rocks or fish in the river if you like, and grass on the edges. Glue basket with Moses, Miriam, and bush onto the page and retell the story of Miriam and Baby Moses.
  • Extra challenge! Check out the video on the Word of the Week: Legalism. How is Legalism different than last week’s word, Grace? Can we get to Heaven by following all the rules in the Bible without accepting Jesus into our hearts? Are we even able to follow all the rules without ever making a mistake? When we make a mistake (sin), what should we do? Knowing that we have a loving God who freely forgives us and offers grace to help us not sin, rather than a God who makes us afraid of condemnation, how does that affect your decision to not sin?
  • Pray together as a family.

3) Activities.

  • Draw a picture about today’s lesson, or color the printable coloring sheet (see below), take a picture and send it to Pastor Shaun so that it can be shared in next week’s video.
  • Scroll down to the music videos and sing along.
  • Have fun using the activities below.
