Joy Wk 3

God is love

“This is the day the Lord has made; let’s rejoice and be glad in it.”

Psalm 118.24 (CSB)

This week we learn how joy can be expressed through a celebration. Watch the video below to learn about joy as told in the parable of the lost son!

Memory Verse:

Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer.

ROMANS 12:12 (CSB)

Going Further

Hi Everyone! A couple of ideas for family activities after watching the video:

1) Read/Review Luke 15.11 – 15.32 (NIV)

2) Family Time.

  • Discussion. Remember our teaching about how true joy comes from being in the presence of our Father? How does the story about the prodigal son teach us that? Who represents our Heavenly Father in the story? How did the prodigal son dishonor his father? How did the other son dishonor his father? How did their father respond in both situations? Did the father ever stop loving either son? How did he demonstrate love to the prodigal son? How did he demonstrate love to his other son? Did the father love one son more than the other? Some of us might look at the prodigal son’s sin as being worse than the other son’s sin, but both of them demonstrated pride. Do you think that God would be less forgiving to someone who runs away from Him than He would be to someone who continues to attend church, read His Bible, but considers himself better than someone else because they don’t attend church?
  • Activity. When we sin, we know we can always ask forgiveness and return to our Father. He is so full of joy that He forgives us and receives us back into His kingdom. The father in this story welcomed his son back with a big hug. Let’s make a “hug” card. Fold a regular 8 ½ X 11 sheet of paper, so that the two short ends meet together in the middle. This will make two closable flaps for the card. Draw a big smiley face so that it shows when you open the card. On a separate sheet of paper (preferably a different color), trace both hands and cut them out. Glue each hand to an opposing flap, fingers pointed inward, one slightly higher than the other. You can write on the card if you wish, the word “Joy” or the memory verse. Give the card to someone who needs a hug!
  • Pray together as a family. Is there someone in your family who has not yet accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior?

3) Activities.

  • Draw a picture about today’s lesson, or color the printable coloring sheet (see below), take a picture and send it to Pastor Shaun or send it to office@hockinson.org so that it can be shared in next week’s video.
