Abraham, Sarah, Isaac

Belief leads to Joy!

Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me. And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”

Genesis 21:6 (NIV)

This week we reflect on how Abraham’s belief led to the Lord blessing him with an heir by allowing his wife Sarah to have a baby son – Isaac. Watch the video below to learn more about this joyful event of having a son!

Memory Verse:

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

3 john 1:4 (esv)

Going Further

Hi Everyone! A couple of ideas for family activities after watching the video:

1) Read/Review: Genesis 15:1-21, 17:1-7 18:1-15, and 21:1-7

2) Family Time:

  • Discussion: Read Gen. 17:4 – 5. What is the new name that God gave Abram? What did Abraham and Abram mean? (Check footnotes in your Bible). How do you think others may have reacted to his new name? How would this new name show everyone that God keeps His promises? After Ishmael was born, how long was it before Sarah and Abraham were given the promise of when their baby would come?  How did they both react when the Lord told them they would have a son? (Gen. 17:17, Gen. 18:12). What did Sarah say after he was born? (Gen. 21:6). What does the name Isaac mean? Do you think that waiting for God’s blessing brought them joy?
  • Activity: 1) Look up the definition of each child’s name. Print out their name and definition in the font of their choice. Let them decorate/color the page, frame it and hang it up. Remind them that when they give their heart to Jesus, their name is written in His book of eternity. 2) Create a 3-D tent picture. Fold and cut a piece of colored construction paper so that the finished product will be a square with a diagonal fold down the middle. Cut on the fold so that you have two equal triangles.  Each triangle can be used to make a tent. Place the triangle so that the longest side is on the bottom. From the center spot of the bottom edge, cut a 2” strip so that you now have two “tent flaps” that open. Glue the tent to a piece of white paper, leaving the tent flaps open. Inside the tent, draw Sarah, Abraham, and Baby Isaac. Give them happy faces!  Instruct them to decorate the outside of the tent with animals, plants, or whatever they would like. Write the memory verse on the back.
  • Pray together as a family: Is there someone in your family who has not yet accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior?
